I am extremely concerned about the negative impact 350 new homes would have in West Mersea.
Firstly, I don't see how easy road will cope with the additional traffic. The corner where east road and kingsland join us particularly busy - even more so in the summer and this is without the extra dwellings.
Secondly, the local doctor's surgery is barely coping to meet the needs of the community as it is. The last 2 times I've had to make an appointment on the day is took me 72 calls and 48 calls to get through. Although this was stressful for me as a professional in my early 30s, it must be impossible for the elderly who have more seriously pressing issues. In addition we have a large number of aging population in Mersea.
Thirdly, I have serious concerns about the lack of school places and provision. From my understanding, the school is at capacity. I am also told that they have cut back on learning support assistants in classrooms. Speaking as a primary school teacher this is of particular concern, as I speak from experience when saying that managing large classes is very difficult and almost impossible to meet every pupils' needs adequately. The school as is is not capable of coping with potentially 350 more families.
Fourthly, our yearly residents have already jumped up in the last year due to multiple caravan sites becoming year long dwellings. The traffic has got worse and 350 new homes would just be too much.
Finally, concerns in the event that the entire island would need to be evacuated. With only one road off how could we possibly evacuate safely with so many more homes?
