Permanent destruction of unique charm of island
Failure to understand existing increased population and traffic due to tourism - Mersea Island is already overloaded
350 new homes is madness

Original submission

The proposal for 350 further homes on Mersea Island is very ill-conceived and does not appear to show any consideration for the fact that Mersea is an Island already under great pressure in the areas of parking and traffic congestion as well as local services such as schools, doctors, dentist etc.

The problem is compounded by the fact that Mersea is a popular tourist destination and in the summer months especially, but also at bank holidays and weekends throughout the year, there is an explosion in the number of people and cars on the island.

There is currently a major parking problem even now and it is nearly impossible to park in the village for shopping.

These developments are located outside of the village so every resident of these new dwellings will need to drive to the village for shopping. 350 new homes will equate to around 1000 new residents and around 700 new cars.

Remember too that the island is cut off by the tide which results in lengthy queues on and off-island. This will be exacerbated by the increase in population and vehicles. Increasing the height of the Strood will not be an option as this would detract from this unique island's charm. Further development will reduce the island's attraction as a tourist venue.

The fact that this proposal is even being considered by our Councillors shows total ignorance of these issues.

I predict that you will face near universal objection from Mersea Island residents.
