I would like to express my strong objection to the above proposal. I know new houses have to be built, but with SO many houses being built all around Colchester, changing the character of the Town, I would have thought that this number was quite adequate for the area.
Mersea Island is at present a magnet for Summer visitors because of its charm and unique character. All these new houses would inevitably change that. These visitors boost the economy of the Island as well as that of Colchester as a whole. Do we want these people to go elsewhere when we are no longer unique? Do we really want to deprive these visitors, and inhabitants of the Island, of these benefits, just to build more houses?
These comments are, of course, quite apart from the more worrying aspects concerning the single access to the Island in the event of an emergency evacuation; the extra pressure on the roads; the strain on the GP's Surgery; the finding of places at the already overcrowded school; the extra pressure on the electricity, gas, water and sewerage system, etc etc.
I hope this proposal will be given very careful consideration over and above the money earned by the Council from Central Government for new houses, and the income from the Council Tax. Extra income over the quality of life of the residents should be given a lot of thought.
