Representation: Mersea is unique and should be preserved.

Existing education and health facilities are struggling to cope. The alternative Walk in Centre in Colchester is hard to reach by bus easily.

The population of Mersea has always swelled greatly in the summer, due to the caravanners. Now, because they are allowed to occupy their vans
during the winter months as well, we are becoming even more crowded.

Original submission

My husband and I were appalled by Colchester Borough Council's extremely ill-thought plan for a huge new development on Mersea Island. What absolute sacrilege of a very special place!
Mersea Island is an unique place and as such should be preserved, not desecrated. We have lived here for almost 30 years and during this time more and more dwellings have been crammed in.
Already the school is too small. The doctor's surgery is struggling to cope. You have to wait 3 weeks or more to get a doctor's appointment. The roads are frequently clogged with traffic and parking in the main shopping area is becoming a real problem at times and as a result, cars park the length of Yorick Road, causing a real hazard. The road surfaces are very poor in places and now look like patchwork quilts as they only repair small pieces. The pavements are also in bad repair and are dangerous to elderly people. The tides are becoming very unpredictable ,making the Strood, our only access road unusable for long periods of time and even when the tide goes down it can take a very long time for traffic to flow again, due to the weight of traffic going in either direction. This leads to very great problems for the emergency services. If you need medical treatment at the weekend and you are not a driver, you have a real problem. The walk in centre is the far side of Colchester and will take you about 2 hours to reach by bus - certainly not ideal if you are not well!

The population of Mersea has always swelled greatly in the summer, due to the caravanners. Now, because they are allowed to occupy their vans
during the winter months as well, we are becoming even more crowded.

Please do not spoil this very special place. Mersea Island is a place full of charm, character and history. IT SHOULD BE PRESERVED!!!
