I would like to add my support to the objections raised by John Akker MBE to the proposed local plan as it affects Mersea Island. There are two points I wish to comment on.
1. Mersea - the island for natural sport and relaxation for the county of Essex
Mersea is, and certainly should be listed as an area of outstanding natural beauty. It provides sport and relaxation for many thousands of Essex residents in a wonderful environment. To name a few sports: sailing, fishing, windsurfing, water skiing, rowing, canoeing, walking, cycling, swimming, bird watching and camping. During the summer 6 months our population increases by many thousands who stay on the boats, houseboats, local houses, b&bs, and caravan and campsites beside the many day visitors. Mersea is unique to Colchester. No other part of the Borough has such a surge in population.
The infrastructure cannot cope with the present population, let alone an increase. Like most old villages the roads are narrow. The footpaths too are very narrow, often on one side of the road only or in many cases not at all. The medical and educational side is already under stress. The Strood and the main road into Colchester were not built for the present volume of traffic. Mersea in fact is already over full.
Mersea should be seen as the jewel in the county of Essex, please do not destroy it.
