CBC's plan to build up to 350 extra dwellings, adding to the population by approximately 1000 will put the island community at risk. The infrastructure is not adequate, with roads not able to cope presently with volumes of traffic, especially with just 1 road on and off the island. In light of the government's announcement that will allow Bradwell B to go ahead, surely there must be policy on safety of communities nearby, and especially Mersea with its uniqueness of being an island. Evacuation of the island in any emergency is via the one road off. The greater the population, the greater problem.
In addition to safety issues, facilities/amenties are already stretched to capacity. Anglian Water has said its at capacity re sewerage. The school, doctors and dentists are struggling and need better facilities. Without upgrading infrastructure and amenities first the island cannot sustain the extra 350 homes.
