Mersea is a small village community which struggles with the influx of summer visitors and caravan park residents, who add to the already considerable strain on local facilities such as the GP surgery.
There simply is not the infrastructure to cope with the proposed number of new homes, multiple occupants and vehicles.
There is only one way on and off the Island, impassable at high tide, the roads are narrow, easily congested and poorly maintained, and parking minimal.
Turning Mersea into a dormitory for Colchester and beyond would destroy the unique Island way of life and be a disaster waiting to happen.
