Mersea Island will struggle to cope with the scale of development proposed unless there is considerable investment to improve the roads, water supply and sewerage, and to the school, GP surgery and parking facilities. All of these are overstretched at present and will be unable to cope with the additional population proposed. The Strood is the only road to access or leave the island and is regularly cut off at high tide. The proposed development of Bradwell raises great anxiety about how Mersea could be safely evacuated in the event of an emergency.
