Representation: The Island cannot cope with its current population tally, let alone increase it by approximately 1,000 people. Such additional demands on highway fabric, medical and dental facilities, schooling cannot just be dealt with through s106. We have no Police presence. We are already supporting huge population increases during the holiday periods. We have only one route of access/escape from the Island.

Original submission

The current community infrastructure on Mersea Island cannot support these proposed developments. Before any increase in housing development can even be considered, greater investment must be made to medical and dental facilities, policing, schooling and highway fabric. It must be remembered that the population of Mersea Island increases dramatically during holiday periods, leading to overcrowding, so the island cannot be classed as 'just another area to support population growth'. We are already doing our bit and beyond. s106 contributions will not be enough to deal with the problem we face if these developments go ahead. East Road cannot cope currently, let alone add 350 families vehicles to the problem. Dawes Lane is currently hardly fit for purpose too. The doctors surgery cannot cope with the population demographic and visitor registrations and is struggling to secure funding for better surgery facilities. We have no Police presence on the island. We are a community with only one access road, often flooded by the tide. Safety and well-being for the population must be paramount.
